ISOLATION

In 2022, when the world shut down due to the pandemic,  the only solace as an artist if you were lucky was to head to your studio to isolate and create.

Artist Statement:

My layered stencil pieces were born from the creative process while implementing a mural for the Pittsburgh Ballet called "Ballet Dreams". The continued experimentation proceeded in the series "Couch Paintings", which created techniques that further developed the illusion of depth with the play on colors for a three dimensional view of an imaginary landscape. When the world shut down at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, the  "Isolation" started with just prepping an old piece of plywood in the studio warehouse with no directional intent.  The emotional state of being cut off from human contact is often felt by artists, but this was different. As the applications of gesso created texture and sanding progressed, vision of a dark path began to take shape in the mind as a dark path without an end.  I knew at that point this would become a stencil painting. Over several weeks of March 2020 and into April, the progress mirrored the emotional stages of isolation during the pandemic.

Additions

As with any large scale projects I like not to waste, so I also did a series of smaller layered stencil paintings. These were given as gifts to real estate clients throughout 2020.
